My Family! Learn English Words for Family Members

Today, we’re going to learn words for the people who are often most important in our lives: our family members. Knowing these words will help you talk about your family in English, whether you’re introducing them, telling stories, or just chatting about your life. Learning Family Words

Let’s learn the English names for different members of your family. Say each word out loud with me and look at the simple explanations.

  1. Mother: This is your female parent. You might also call her “Mom” or “Mama.”
    • Practice: Say “mother.” Now say “Mom.” Say “Mama.” Great!
  2. Father: This is your male parent. You might also call him “Dad” or “Papa.”
    • Practice: Say “father.” Now say “Dad.” Say “Papa.” Wonderful!
  3. Parents: This word refers to both your mother and your father together.
    • Practice: Say “parents.” Good job!
  4. Brother: This is a boy who has the same parents as you.

  5. Sister: This is a girl who has the same parents as you.

We can also ask simple questions about family:
