English Express Café | Careful, Careless and Carefree

Employee:

Welcome to English Express Café, sir. While you’re waiting for your order to be ready, would you care to learn something interesting?

Customer:

Sure thing! It’s always a good idea to listen to something useful while I’m waiting. I always listen to English Plus Podcast when I have time. There’s always something interesting to learn. So, what do you have for me today?

Employee:

Well, other than your order, let me tell you about being careful, careless and carefree. Do you know the difference between these words?

Customer:

I have an idea, but I’m not so sure about carefree.

Employee:

Well, before I start telling you about that, let me remind our YouTube viewers to subscribe and hit the bell icon. If you want to be the first to know whenever we publish a new video, go ahead and subscribe to our channel. And you can also share our videos with your friends and family to help us spread English knowledge everywhere, and if you like the video, don’t forget to give us a thumbs up. Finally, if you have anything to say to us, leave us a comment and we will respond as fast as we can.

Well, now let’s talk about the difference between careful, careless and carefree.

Let’s start with careful: If you are careful, you do something with a lot of attention. For example, “She told me to be careful with the lawnmower.”

Or we can say, “He had to be careful about what he said.”

Customer:

We can use that as well to talk about how careful you should be while driving.

Employee:

That’s right, you should always be as careful as you can while driving.

Customer:

Well, I don’t think I had any problems understanding the word, ‘careful’. What about ‘careless’? Is it simply the opposite of careful?

Employee:

Well, you can say that. If you are careless, you do things badly because you are not giving them enough attention. Careless, as you just said, is the opposite of careful.

Customer:

I got that right, didn’t I?

Employee:

Sure you did! For example, you can say, “I had been careless and let him wander off on his own.”

Customer:

Well, that’s not a good thing. I should have been careful. I should have kept an eye on him.

Employee:

Absolutely!

Customer:

We can also use careless to talk about parents. We can say, “Some parents are accused of being careless with their children’s health.

Employee:

That’s right! You can’t be careless when it comes to your children’s health. You should be careful about what they eat and drink. It’s the parents’ responsibility and they cannot afford to be careless.

Customer:

That’s right. Now, what about ‘carefree’. I believe this one might be a little confusing to me.

Employee:

No problem. That’s what I’m here to explain to you. While ‘careless’ is a word we use to describe negative behaviors and attitudes, or even people, ‘carefree’ is not a negative word at all. Some people might confuse ‘carefree’ with ‘careless’ thinking that both have kind of the same meaning, but that can’t be further from the truth. Someone who is carefree has no worries and can therefore enjoy life. For example, we can say, “When he was younger, he was carefree. Now, he worries about pretty much everything.”

Customer:

It’s definitely a positive word. I wish I could be a little bit more carefree and not worry about everything.

Employee:

Well, maybe, we can’t be completely carefree as responsible adults, but at least we should stop worrying about the things we can’t control, and try and enjoy life a little more.

Customer:

I can’t say no to that! Well, thank you for the information. I really enjoyed my wait here at English Express Café. I bet you’ll see me again here. Good coffee, good food and good information!

Employee:

Thank you, sir. I hope to see you again soon.
