This creates a profoundly distorted view of the world. Even if the world is, on many objective measures like global poverty and lifespans, getting better over the long term, our daily information diet consists of a concentrated stream of the worst things happening anywhere on the planet. This leads to a pervasive sense that things are constantly getting worse, which in turn fuels anxiety, anger, and political discontent.

When you combine Negativity Bias with Confirmation Bias and Group Polarization, you get a truly toxic brew. Our echo chambers don’t just echo; they echo the most negative and threatening information that confirms our tribe’s worldview. We don’t just seek information that our side is right; we seek information that the other side is dangerous, corrupt, and an existential threat. This constant focus on the negative aspects of the “out-group” is what fuels the intense animosity and dehumanization we see in modern politics.

So, a debiasing technique we didn’t cover is the conscious practice of seeking out positive or neutral information. This isn’t about being a Pollyanna or ignoring real problems. It’s about consciously counteracting the firehose of negativity. This could mean subscribing to a “good news” newsletter, actively following social media accounts that focus on solutions rather than problems, or simply making a daily practice of noting down three positive things that happened. It’s about deliberately rebalancing our information diet to give our brains a more statistically accurate, and ultimately more hopeful, picture of the world.
