The Thing You're Doing Right Now Is Harder Than It Looks
Reading this sentence is, by any reasonable measure, one of the most neurologically complex acts a human being can perform. Not because the words are particularly difficult, but because reading itself — the act of translating marks on a surface into meaning, inference, emotion, memory, and thought — is a cognitive tour de force that your brain has been slowly building the infrastructure for since you were three years old.
The reason this is worth pointing out is that we are, as a culture, in the process of quietly deciding it isn't worth the effort. And we are making that decision largely without examining it.
Audiobooks at 1.5 speed. Fifteen-minute video summaries of books you've been meaning to read for years. AI-generated chapter breakdowns. Book review podcasts. Newsletter digests. None of these things are bad in themselves. The problem is when they start replacing the thing they were supposed to supplement. The problem is when we stop reading long-form text and convince ourselves we haven't lost anything.
We have lost something. And it may be more significant than most of us realize.
Deep Reading Is Not Just Reading Faster or Slower
Let's start with what deep reading actually means, because the term gets used loosely. Deep reading, in the neurological and cognitive science sense, is not simply a slow reading pace. It is a constellation of cognitive processes activated by sustained engagement with complex, long-form written text — processes that include inferential reasoning, analogical thinking, critical analysis, the integration of prior knowledge with new information, perspective-taking, and a particular quality of introspective reflection that reading researchers Maryanne Wolf and Mirit Barzillai have described as "the reading brain's crowning achievement."
The reason these processes cluster specifically around reading — and particularly around print reading of extended texts — is partly historical and partly biological.
The Reading Brain Is a Constructed Technology
Here is something that should give you pause: your brain did not evolve to read. There is no reading center in the human brain, no region that was genetically selected over millions of years to decode written language, because writing was only invented approximately 5,000 years ago — a geological eye-blink in terms of human evolution.
What happened instead is something that reading neuroscientist Maryanne Wolf calls "neuroplastic repurposing": the brain conscripted existing circuits — vision, language, motor coordination, memory, emotion — and rewired them into a new, entirely constructed network. The reading circuit that your brain built over years of instruction and practice is a genuine biological achievement. It is also fragile. Because it was constructed rather than evolved, it has to be actively maintained, or it degrades.
This is the first thing most people don't know about reading: the capacity for deep reading is not a fixed ability. It is a neural habit. And like all habits, it weakens with disuse.
What Deep Reading Builds — and What Loses It
What does the deep reading brain actually do that other forms of information consumption don't?
The Inferential Engine
When you read a complex text — a novel, a long-form essay, a serious work of nonfiction — your brain is constantly doing something that researchers call inference generation. You are not just processing what the text says; you are continuously building hypotheses about what it implies, what might happen next, how this passage connects to something you read four chapters ago, what the author's assumptions might be, what is notably absent from what's being said.
This inferential work is neurologically expensive. It requires the simultaneous activation of multiple brain systems: the language network, the default mode network (associated with mind-wandering and creative thinking), the prefrontal cortex (associated with executive function and critical analysis), and the limbic system (associated with emotion and empathy). Deep reading is, in the most literal sense, a whole-brain workout.
Video and audio formats activate some of these systems, sometimes powerfully. But they do so along pathways that are more externally directed — meaning the cognitive and emotional material is largely delivered rather than constructed. When you watch a film adaptation of a novel, someone else has already done the work of imagining what the characters look like, how the setting feels, what emotional tone the scene should carry. When you read the novel, your brain builds all of that. And the building is not a luxury. It is the development.
Empathy as a Reading Product
One of the most robust and consistently replicated findings in cognitive psychology is that reading literary fiction reliably improves performance on measures of theory of mind — the cognitive capacity to understand that other people have mental states, beliefs, desires, and perspectives different from your own.
This is not a trivial finding. Theory of mind is the cognitive foundation of empathy, of moral reasoning, of the ability to navigate social complexity, to recognize bias in yourself and others, and to make decisions that account for the full range of affected perspectives. These are not soft skills. They are among the most important cognitive tools a human being can have.
The mechanism appears to be this: literary fiction, at its best, forces you into close contact with the interior life of characters who are not like you — whose experience, background, fears, and ways of seeing the world are systematically different from your own. The reading brain must actively construct those interior lives. It must enter a perspective it doesn't naturally occupy and sustain that occupation long enough to understand it. This is empathy training at a neurological level.
Can you develop empathy through other media? Yes, absolutely. Film and television produce genuine emotional engagement. But the particular mechanism of literary reading — the slow, self-paced, interior, individually constructed engagement with another mind's perspective — appears to produce specific cognitive effects that other media do not fully replicate.
The Distraction Tax — What Interrupted Reading Costs
Here is where the modern media environment and the deep reading requirement come into direct conflict. Deep reading requires sustained, uninterrupted attention over an extended period. It requires a mental state that is sometimes called "focused attention" or, in Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's framing, "flow" — a state of full cognitive engagement in which attention is fully deployed on a single complex task.
This mental state is exactly what smartphones, notifications, social media, and the perpetual availability of quick-hit information content are designed to disrupt. And here's the insidious part: the disruption doesn't just interrupt reading. It may, over time, rewire the attentional habits of the brain in ways that make the sustained concentration required for deep reading progressively harder to access.
The Skimming Brain
There is emerging evidence — most prominently in the work of Maryanne Wolf in her book Reader, Come Home — that people who have migrated substantially to screen-based reading of short-form content are developing what she calls a "bi-literate brain": a brain that has two reading modes, deep and shallow, but that increasingly defaults to the shallow mode even when reading material that genuinely warrants the deep mode.
In practical terms, this means educated adults who were once capable of sustained deep reading are finding it progressively harder to read a serious book from beginning to end without distraction, without the urge to skim, without the attention wandering in ways that make genuine comprehension elusive.
If this happens to adults who developed deep reading capacities before the smartphone era, the implications for children who are developing their reading circuits now — in an environment saturated with short-form, fast-moving, visually rich content — are worth taking seriously and urgently.
The Case Against Substitutes
Let's be specific about what is and isn't lost in common substitutions for deep reading.
Audiobooks are a genuine format for experiencing literature and are particularly valuable for people with print-based reading difficulties. But listening and reading engage partially different neural networks. Listening is, evolutionarily, a more natural act — the auditory language processing system is far older in the brain than the visual reading network. Some research suggests that reading produces deeper semantic encoding, better recall of details, and stronger comprehension for abstract material. For narrative, the difference is smaller. For complex argument and abstract reasoning, it's larger.
Video summaries and book breakdowns serve one specific function well: they help you decide whether a topic is worth your deeper investigation. They are an entrance hall, not the building. Using them as a substitute for the reading itself is, cognitively speaking, roughly equivalent to watching a documentary about running a marathon and considering yourself physically fit.
AI-generated summaries are the most recent and most efficient substitute, and the most efficient is not the same as the most effective. An AI summary tells you what a book says. It cannot give you the experience of the book saying it to you, at your pace, through your particular neural architecture, connecting to your specific web of knowledge and experience and feeling. The map is not the territory.
What This Means for Children — and for the Adults Who Are Raising Them
The stakes here are highest for children, whose reading circuits are currently in development. A child's reading brain is not a smaller version of an adult's — it is an actively constructing biological system, and the inputs it receives during the critical years of reading development shape the architecture it builds.
Children who are read to extensively, who read long-form texts consistently, and who develop the habit of deep reading before the cognitive habits of screen culture take hold appear to develop richer neural networks for inference, empathy, and abstract thought. Children who move primarily through audio-visual media during those same years may develop different — not inferior, but genuinely different — cognitive profiles.
The question isn't whether screens are bad. It's whether the specific cognitive construction that happens in sustained deep reading is being built, or whether it is being bypassed in favor of faster, easier, more immediately rewarding modes of engagement that do not do the same developmental work.
That question deserves an honest answer, not a reflexive defense of current habits.
Reclaiming the Reading Brain
None of this is irreversible. The reading brain, because it is constructed through neuroplasticity, can be reconstructed through sustained practice. Adults who have drifted away from deep reading can rebuild the habit — slowly, deliberately, with appropriate expectations that it will feel cognitively uncomfortable at first because the attentional muscles have weakened.
The path back to deep reading looks like this: short sessions deliberately extended over time, a physical book rather than a screen where possible, notifications off for the duration, a commitment to finishing rather than sampling, and a tolerance for the discomfort of sustained attention in a world that has engineered that discomfort at industrial scale.
This is not a nostalgic argument for the superiority of print over digital. It is a neurological argument for the preservation of a specific cognitive capacity — one that we built, that we can lose, and that we cannot fully replace with anything else we currently have.
The question is whether we think it's worth keeping.
LET'S GET CRITICAL
The article makes a compelling case for deep reading, and most of it is grounded in solid research. Maryanne Wolf's work is serious neuroscience. The evidence on literary fiction and theory of mind is robust and replicable. The neuroplasticity argument — that reading circuits are built through practice and weaken through disuse — is mainstream cognitive science, not fringe opinion.
But here's the thing about compelling arguments: they deserve scrutiny in proportion to their compellingness. And this one, while largely correct, has several places where it overreaches, oversimplifies, or omits perspectives that complicate the picture significantly.
Let's start with the central framing. The article positions deep reading as a uniquely threatened cognitive capacity and implies that audio-visual media are primarily substitutes rather than alternatives. But is this framing historically accurate? The history of anxiety about new media replacing reading is, itself, a very long one. Socrates worried that writing would weaken memory — and he was right, in the narrow sense that oral culture required and produced extraordinary feats of memory that writing culture largely abandoned. Critics of the printing press worried it would flood the world with inferior texts and dumb down educated discourse. Nineteenth-century educators worried that the novel was corrupting young minds and degrading serious literacy. Radio was going to end reading. Television was going to end reading. The internet was going to end reading. And yet here we are, with more books published annually than at any point in human history, and literacy rates globally at their highest-ever levels.
This isn't an argument that the current concern is unfounded. It's an argument for epistemic humility: the people making those earlier predictions weren't stupid, and they weren't entirely wrong about the effects of new media on existing cognitive habits. But their catastrophizing about the end of meaningful intellectual life proved to be premature. It's worth holding that track record in mind.
Second, the article's treatment of audiobooks and listening is more dismissive than the research quite justifies. Yes, there are studies showing that reading produces deeper semantic encoding in some contexts. There are also studies showing equivalent comprehension for narrative material, and there is a substantial body of research showing that listening to complex spoken text — particularly complex academic lectures, dense spoken argument, and literary audio — activates deep inferential processing comparable to reading. Oral cultures throughout history produced extraordinary intellectual traditions — Homeric epic, Socratic philosophy, Jewish Talmudic debate, much of the Islamic Golden Age's intellectual transmission — all primarily or substantially through listening and memory rather than private reading. The idea that listening is cognitively inferior to reading is not well-supported by the full range of evidence, and it may carry a cultural bias toward a particular Western, post-Gutenberg model of intellectual life.
Third — and this is perhaps the most important omission — the article almost entirely ignores access and equity. The history of deep reading as an intellectual practice is also a history of privilege. For most of the print era, sustained private reading of long-form texts was available primarily to those with enough leisure time, enough economic security, enough physical access to texts, and enough formal education to develop the reading habit. Working-class communities, oral cultures, non-literate traditions — these were not cognitively inferior. They had different cognitive tools, many of which were extremely sophisticated and which the print-centric model of intelligence has systematically undervalued. When we speak of "deep reading" as the pinnacle of cognitive development, we should be honest about whose definition of deep thinking we are centering.
Moreover, audio and video formats have dramatically expanded access to complex ideas for people who are dyslexic, visually impaired, or who learned to think primarily through oral tradition. Telling those people that their mode of engagement is cognitively second-rate requires a confidence in the evidence that the evidence doesn't fully support.
Fourth, the article's argument about children deserves more nuance. Yes, reading development matters. Yes, the quality of the early reading environment predicts later cognitive outcomes. But the research on screen time and cognitive development in children is considerably more mixed and contested than the article's framing suggests. Many of the most alarming studies on screen time and children's cognitive development have failed to replicate at scale, have used proxy measures of questionable validity, or have been conducted by researchers with pre-existing positions on the subject. The picture is complicated, and the complicated picture deserves to be presented, not smoothed into a cleaner narrative.
Fifth, let's examine the empathy-and-fiction claim more carefully. The finding that literary fiction improves theory of mind scores is well-replicated at the experimental level. But the leap from "improves performance on a theory of mind test in a short-term experimental setting" to "is the primary or superior vehicle for developing empathy as a life trait" is a considerable one. Long-term, longitudinal evidence for the empathy claim is thinner than the short-term experimental evidence. And other activities — immersive theatre, musical ensemble performance, certain sports, caretaking roles — also show strong associations with empathy development. Reading is one road. It may not be the only road.
None of this undermines the article's core argument: that deep reading is a genuinely valuable cognitive practice worth preserving and protecting. It does suggest that the argument is strongest when it presents itself as "this is something important worth keeping" rather than "everything else is cognitively inferior." The former is defensible and persuasive. The latter is overclaiming.
