None of these things are bad in themselves. The problem is when they start replacing the thing they were supposed to supplement. AUTHOR'S COMMENTARY

The title is meant to press on multiple meanings simultaneously. "What we had time for" suggests both the past — the things we once made time for and perhaps no longer do — and a present reckoning: what, in our actual lives as they are currently structured, do we have time for? The story's central movement is about recovering something that hadn't been lost through a single dramatic event but had simply been crowded out, quietly, incrementally, by the accumulation of efficient habits.

Nico was a character I wanted to inhabit a very specific kind of modern competence. He is not digitally addicted in any dramatic or self-destructive way. He is not someone whose relationship with screens is a problem in any obvious sense. He is simply someone who has become very good at processing information efficiently — at getting the gist, moving on, staying on top of things — and who has, without noticing the moment it happened, lost access to a different, slower, more submersive mode of engagement. The loss is not dramatic. It's architectural. His cognitive habits have been quietly rebuilt around speed.

I deliberately avoided any scene in which Nico reflects explicitly on deep reading or media consumption or neuroscience. The story is not about what he thinks about reading. It is about what happens to him when he reads — and the contrast between that experience and how the rest of his life feels. The forty-minute passage where he surfaces from the book and feels genuine disorientation — the "waking from a lucid dream" quality — is the story's most thematically important moment, and I wanted it to arrive before Nico has any framework to understand it. He just notices it. He sits with it. Then the phone lights up and it dissolves.

Tara exists partly as a foil — she's someone who has maintained what Nico has lost — but I tried hard not to make her a mouthpiece or a paragon. Her observation that Nico "seems very efficient lately" is delivered as concern, not critique, and her "I'm always worried about you" roots it in their relationship rather than in an abstract argument about media habits. The story doesn't need to editorialize. The relationship does the work.

Maya is the story's most carefully constructed character. She is not a tragic figure of childhood lost to screens. She is a competent, thoughtful nine-year-old who completes her reading log with the precision of someone who has learned that twenty minutes of reading is the requirement and twenty minutes is what gets done. Her observation about the Narnia books — "the characters wanted things, and I wanted them to get the things" — is the most important single line in the story. It describes, with the directness of a child, exactly what narrative investment feels like from the inside. It also tells you something about what the dog book is missing: nobody wants anything enough. The story is hitting its page quota without creating desire.

The scene where Nico asks Maya about getting lost in a book was built around a distinction I find genuinely important: the difference between a text that tells you it's sad and a text that makes you feel sad. Maya understands the difference instinctively. She just hadn't had it named yet. I wanted that exchange to be the moment where Nico — who is an intelligent adult but who has been thinking about books the way he thinks about everything else, efficiently — is brought up short by his nine-year-old daughter describing the mechanism of narrative engagement more accurately than he could have.

The ending was the hardest thing to write, because the story could easily have ended with a neat resolution: Nico reads, Nico is changed, Nico reconnects with his daughter, all is well. I pushed against that. What we get instead is one evening. He reads to her. He does the voices. She leans in. He doesn't check his phone. The story ends mid-session, in the middle of something ongoing rather than at the close of a transformation. I wanted the ending to feel like a beginning rather than a conclusion — because the argument of the article is that rebuilding the deep reading habit is a long, gradual process, not a moment of insight, and I wanted the story to have that texture.

The lighthouse novel Nico pulls from the shelf deliberately echoes the Icelandic novel's structure: both are about rediscovery across time, about things that were hidden and then found, about long silences that turn out to have held something important. That resonance is there for readers who want to feel it. It doesn't need to be noticed to work.

The phone, throughout the story, is not a villain. It's ambient. It buzzes. Sometimes Nico picks it up; sometimes he puts it face down. It is simply present the way gravity is present — an environmental condition that shapes behavior without requiring anyone to be blamed for it.

That, more than anything, was what I wanted the story to capture: that the erosion of deep reading doesn't require bad intentions, irresponsible parenting, or personal weakness. It requires only the ordinary conditions of modern life, left unexamined and unchallenged. The challenge is simply noticing.

LET'S DISCUSS

All the reading and listening in the world adds up to less than you'd hope if you never do anything with the ideas. The real consolidation of learning happens in conversation — when you have to put something into words for someone else, defend a position you're not entirely sure about, and hear your assumptions knocked around a little. So let's do that.

Question 1

The article argues that deep reading builds specific cognitive capacities — inferential reasoning, empathy through theory of mind, sustained attention — that audio-visual media don't fully replicate. McLuhan's response is that new media environments build different cognitive capacities rather than simply lesser ones. Who do you find more persuasive, and why? The article recommends rebuilding the deep reading habit through deliberate practice: short sessions extended over time, print where possible, notifications off, commitment to finishing. But a counterargument would be that the time and energy required to maintain a deep reading practice is itself a form of privilege — not everyone has evenings free of caregiving, second jobs, or survival-level stress. Is the deep reading imperative an argument for everyone, or is it implicitly addressed to people who already have the conditions that make it possible? And if it's the latter, what are the implications?

WHAT NOW? — FRAMEWORK & 7-DAY ACTION PLAN

The Framework

The honest starting point is this: deep reading is genuinely valuable and genuinely at risk, and defending it does not require pretending that audio-visual media are cognitively worthless. Hold both truths simultaneously — the specific value of deep reading and the genuine value of other formats — and build from there.

The framework rests on four principles. First, protect depth over breadth. Consuming more content across more formats is not the same as knowing more. Depth of engagement produces the kind of understanding that transfers, that becomes part of how you think rather than just what you know. One book read with full attention is worth more, cognitively, than twenty summaries. Build your information diet to include at least some experience of genuine depth.

Second, develop media literacy about substitution. Be honest with yourself about when you're using a summary or a podcast as a bridge to deeper engagement and when you're using it as a substitute. Neither is inherently wrong, but only one of them is honest. The summary that leads you to read the book is a supplement. The summary that replaces the book is a substitution. Know which one you're doing.

Third, children need modeling and environment, not just instruction. If you are a parent or an educator, the most powerful thing you can do for a child's reading development is not to buy them books or mandate reading minutes — though those help. It is to let them see you deeply engaged with a text: absorbed, reluctant to be interrupted, occasionally explaining to them what you just read and why you found it striking. Children learn what matters by watching what the adults in their lives do with their time and attention.

Fourth, rebuild gradually and without self-punishment. If you've lost the deep reading habit, it will feel uncomfortable to rebuild. This is normal — attentional muscles have weakened and re-strengthening them is effortful. Start with texts that have high narrative pull. Set short, achievable sessions. Extend them slowly. Don't measure success by speed or volume. Measure it by absorption.

7-Day Action Plan

Day 1 — Audit honestly. Spend five minutes listing the long-form texts you've read in the past three months. How many books, long essays, or extended articles did you read in full, with focused attention, from beginning to end? No judgment — just the honest number. Then list how many hours you've spent on audio or video content in the same period. The comparison is information, not accusation.

Day 2 — Pick one book and commit. Choose a book you've been meaning to read, or one that was recommended by someone whose intellectual judgment you trust. Commit to reading at least ten pages today, with notifications off, in a physical space that doesn't have other open screens.

Day 3 — Examine one substitution. Identify one content consumption habit from the past week — a summary, a podcast episode, a YouTube breakdown — and ask yourself: did this lead me toward deeper engagement with the topic, or did it satisfy my sense of having engaged without actually deepening my understanding? No rhetorical tricks. Just honest evaluation.

Day 4 — Read aloud. If you have a child in your life, read to them for twenty minutes today — not from their school book, but from something with genuine narrative investment. If you don't have a child in your life, read something aloud to yourself. The shift in sensory channel changes the cognitive experience in interesting ways.

Day 5 — Try the discomfort. Pick something you genuinely find difficult: a dense essay, a chapter of serious nonfiction, a short story that requires active inference. Sit with the discomfort of not immediately understanding. Read slowly. Do not skim. Notice what it feels like to be in not-yet-knowing, and stay there longer than feels comfortable.

Day 6 — Have a reading conversation. Talk to someone about a text you've read recently. Not a summary — the actual experience of reading it. What surprised you? What unsettled you? What did you not understand? Articulating the texture of a reading experience consolidates and deepens it.

Day 7 — Design one structural change. Identify one small structural change to your environment or habits that would make sustained deep reading marginally easier: a dedicated chair with no screens nearby, a specific time in the week designated for reading, a book kept on your work desk, a notification schedule that gives you thirty minutes of uninterrupted time in the morning. Small environmental changes have large behavioral effects.
