A welfare application form that’s 40 pages long, written in dense legalese, requires five different obscure forms of proof and makes you take repeated trips to an understaffed office during working hours. A tax levied directly on the user’s already depleted cognitive resources. So by streamlining and automating things like maybe automatically renewing benefits based on tax data the government already has, or allowing single click verification where possible. You are literally reducing the amount of mental effort required just to access basic support.

How it alters perception, focus, decision-making. You have to show the cognitive load, show the tunnel vision, show the decision fatigue and action, not just tell the reader about it. You want to put the reader right inside that feeling of anxiety, that narrowing focus.

Yes. You want the reader to experience the cognitive tunneling, not just be told about it. High cognitive load isn’t just an abstract thought.
It often manifests physically. So don’t just write, she was worried about money. Show it how? Show it through sensory details tied to the internal state.
The fluorescent lights of the discount store hum. A high pitched whine that screeps against my nerves. My palms feel slick, damp as I grip the handle of the nearly empty shopping cart.
There’s a tightness in my chest, a pressure building behind my eyes. All the choices blur. My focus narrows, zeroes in on just the price tags, the stark black numbers screaming impossibility.
Wow. That makes the internal anxiety feel real tangible. You connect the mental state to physical sensations and the immediate environment.
Exactly. It makes the abstract concept concrete and felt. Technique three gets even more subtle.
Manipulating the actual sentence structure to reflect the narrator’s psychological state. Yes. This is where grammar itself becomes a tool for conveying psychology.
It’s incredibly powerful when done well. You can control the pace and rhythm of the reader’s own thought process as they read. How? What kind of structures match what states? Well, for moments of panic, stress, or when the brain is trying to conserve energy under high load, you use short fragmented sentences, maybe even sentence fragments.
Like rapid fire thoughts. Exactly. It mimics that feeling of disjointed, urgent processing, short bursts of critical information.
Only $10 left. Rent due tomorrow. Kids need shoes.
Phone bill overdue. Can’t think. Too much.
That staccato rhythm immediately signals a state of high stress, maybe overwhelm. Okay. And the opposite.
Conversely, to show a mind that’s spiraling, caught in obsessive thought loops, which is a classic symptom of high, uncontrolled cognitive load where you can’t stop ruminating, you use long, rambling, run-on sentences. Sentences that feel breathless, maybe lacking punctuation. Precisely.
The lack of clear breaks mirrors the brain’s inability to stop, to punctuate the thought process, to find a resolution. It’s stuck cycling through anxieties, possibilities, self-blame. The example used for this is really effective.
I just have to call the landlord and tell him the rent will be late. Because if I mail the check, now it’ll bounce. And then there’s the overdraft fee.

And critically, the narrative frequently avoids a neat, heroic resolution. So the character doesn’t suddenly find superhuman strength and solve everything? Often, no.
Because that wouldn’t realistically reflect the impact of severe depletion. Instead, the ending might show the character making the easier choice, the passive choice, the one that prioritizes immediate mental rest over continued effort or long-term optimization. So instead of pushing through, finding that extra bit of energy to make the right calculation or take the difficult action, the character might just stop.

Why? Because the fundamental threat hasn’t been neutralized. The brain simply won’t let the PFC recover its full capacity until the threat feels gone.
You’re asking the brain to perform long-term planning while it still believes fundamentally that there’s a lion in the room. I understand the instinct, really, to prioritize removing the threat structurally. But structure, well, structure takes time, doesn’t it? Sometimes a lot of time.

We have to understand that taking out a high-interest payday loan isn’t some kind of moral foolishness. It’s often a desperate, immediate attempt to solve the most pressing crisis when the weakened PFC is struggling to assert long-term consequences over the amygdala’s screaming demand for immediate relief.
Exactly. It’s an overwhelmed mind making a predictable, almost rational, in the moment, mistake. I’m sorry, I just don’t quite buy that focusing only on the resulting cognitive fatigue is the right fix.
The necessity for that payday loan in the first place or the inability to pay down debt, that’s a fundamental structural failure. It’s about lack of access to fair credit, unstable income, things like that.
