A Tribute to KD
This album is a musical vigil for a brother lost to the silence of distance. Dedicated to the memory of my dear friend KD, The Farewell I Never Gave explores the crushing weight of receiving tragic news while miles away, the agony of a funeral missed, and the void left by a friendship that ended too soon. It is a collection of unspoken goodbyes, a lament for the closure that circumstance denied, and a tribute to the hole he left in my life. Since I could not stand by his grave, I built this monument in sound.
A Letter to KD
Dear KD,
It feels impossible to be writing this. A part of me is still waiting for the phone to ring, expecting to hear your voice on the other end, telling me this was all just a terrible mistake. But the silence has settled in, and I am slowly learning to live with the echo of your absence.
I am writing this because I couldn’t be there. That is a weight I carry every single day. I wasn’t there to hold your hand at the end, and I wasn’t there to stand by your grave and say a proper goodbye. The miles between us felt infinite, and the circumstances cruel. It hurts to think that while others were laying flowers, I was stuck here, paralyzed by the distance, unable to do the one thing a friend should do.
Please forgive me for that.
Do you remember how we used to dream when we were kids that one day we would become great writers and how we used to compete on opposite park benches with our weary notebooks trying to finish the perfect detective story before one another. Well, your ink has dried; I still have some left. I promise I will keep writing in that notebook until the very last moment. I will still try to beat you to one perfect story, but none of my stories will ever beat those memories I have etched in my existence.
I can’t write more without drenching the paper with my tears, but I’m not sad that you’re gone and I’m still here. I use that to remind myself of the sobering truth, that I have no idea why I’m still here while you’re gone, so I can’t be but grateful for every moment we were blessed to spend together, and I will cherish every moment I have left to honor your memory.
Since I couldn’t stand there physically to honor you, I did the only thing I knew how to do. I went to the music. I poured all the anger, the shock, and the sorrow into these notes. I couldn’t carry your casket, my brother, so I tried to carry your memory in a melody instead. I built you a monument in sound, a place where I can visit you, where the distance doesn’t matter, and where we can speak without words.
You have left a massive hole in my life, KD. The world feels a little quieter, a little darker, without you in it. But I promise you this: as long as I am making music, as long as I am writing, you will not be forgotten.
Rest now. The fight is over.
