Is RSVP Optional?

by | Jan 22, 2025 | Common Mistakes

Did you ever get an invite with “RSVP” on it and think, “Oh, that’s just a suggestion. No big deal if I don’t respond.” Spoiler: it’s a big deal.

RSVP comes from the French phrase “Répondez, s’il vous plaît,” which means “Please respond.” It’s not optional—it’s how the host knows if they need extra chairs, food, or, you know, a karaoke machine.

So, next time you see RSVP, just send a quick reply—it’s polite and saves everyone a lot of guessing. I hope you learned something you didn’t know about.
