Grandiloquent — Big Words, Small Ideas, and the Art of Saying Nothing Impressively

Have you ever listened to someone speak for several minutes and realized, somewhere in the third paragraph, that they haven't actually said anything?

Congratulations. You've just identified grandiloquence. And the word for it is almost as satisfying as catching the thing itself.

Grandiloquent means pompous or extravagant in language, style, or manner, especially in a way that is intended to impress. It comes from the Latin grandiloquus — grandis (great, grand) + loqui (to speak). Grand speaking. Speaking with enormous grandeur. But notice that the definition includes "intended to impress" — because that intention is the whole reveal. The grandiloquent speaker isn't communicating. They're performing.

Think of the political speech full of soaring rhetoric that, when examined, contains no actual policy. The corporate memo written in such elevated corporate-speak that it says nothing about what will actually happen. The academic paper so dressed in jargon that the small idea inside it is invisible. The person at the dinner party who talks longest and says least, but says it magnificently.

Grandiloquence is impressive at a distance. It's designed to be. The long words, the formal constructions, the air of authority — these trigger a kind of deference in the listener. We assume that speech this ornate must carry weight. But the closer you look, the less substance you find. The grand edifice is often empty.

Here's the test: can you say it simply? Genuine ideas can almost always survive simplification. If reducing something to plain language reveals that nothing is there, the elaborate version was masking a void. Real depth doesn't need decoration — decoration is what you use when depth is absent.

The opposite of grandiloquent isn't plain or simple or boring. It's clear. It's the speaker who uses exactly the right words — no more, no fewer — and trusts the idea to do the work. That person is usually the most interesting in the room. Not the loudest, not the most ornate. The clearest.

There's a bit of fun in this too: grandiloquent is itself a slightly grandiloquent word. It knows what it is. It winks at you. That self-awareness is part of its delight.

Here's your question: Think of a time you were taken in by grandiloquence — when impressive language made you assume substance that wasn't quite there. What gave it away? And do you ever find yourself reaching for grandiloquent language — and if so, what are you covering?
