We often treat contentiousness as a social bad — the thing to be avoided at all costs, neutralized by diplomatic language, smoothed over with careful phrasing. And in the short-term management of social occasions, that's often wise. Nobody goes to a wedding hoping for a debate about economic policy.

That's not something to avoid. It's something to engage with — carefully, honestly, in the right setting and with the right kind of respect for the fact that the other person's position isn't simply stupidity. They're usually coming from a different set of values, experiences, and priorities that have their own internal logic.

There's also a personal dimension. The contentious topics within yourself — the questions you can't settle, the places where your own values pull in different directions — are precisely where your most important thinking lives. The contentious inner territory is where you actually figure out what you believe, as opposed to what you've simply inherited or assumed.
