Before You Listen: Building Your Academic Listening Skills
Academic listening is a different skill from conversational listening, and international exams know it. In a real conversation, you can ask someone to repeat themselves. In an exam, the audio plays once, it lasts several minutes, and the questions rarely repeat the words you heard. This is why passive listening, the kind where you simply hope to understand, produces disappointing scores even for students with strong vocabulary.
The most useful shift you can make is to listen for structure rather than for words. Academic speakers signal where they are going. Phrases like "let me begin with a puzzle," "now, I want to be careful here," and "the practical implication is this" are road signs. When you hear one, you know something important is coming, and you know what kind of thing it is: an example, a qualification, an application. Train your ear to catch these signals and you will follow a lecture even when individual sentences slip past you.
A second skill worth developing is listening for attitude. Many test questions ask what the speaker thinks, not what the speaker said. Speakers rarely announce their opinions directly. Instead they signal them through hedging language ("this is often misreported," "it would be a mistake to conclude"), through emphasis, and through what they choose to qualify. In today's talk, the speaker discusses rewards in a way that is neither wholly positive nor wholly negative. Notice how that balance is built.
Third, practice note-taking that captures relationships, not sentences. Write "reward → less drawing" rather than trying to transcribe a full clause. Arrows, abbreviations, and short symbols let you keep pace with a speaker delivering around 150 words per minute. Full sentences guarantee you fall behind.
Finally, resist the urge to stop when you miss something. Missing a phrase is normal for every listener, including native speakers. What separates high scorers from low scorers is recovery speed. Let the missed detail go, rejoin the speaker at the next signal phrase, and keep moving.
For this particular recording, pay close attention to two things. First, the speaker introduces several named concepts and then immediately explains them in ordinary language. If a technical term escapes you, the explanation that follows will usually rescue you. Second, the talk contains research studies used for different purposes: one challenges an assumption, another demonstrates a mechanism. the overjustification effect: The technical name for what happens when you give someone a reason to do something they already had a reason to do, and the new reason pushes out the old one. The speaker introduces the research first and the label second, which is a common lecture pattern.
contingent on: Depending on, or conditional upon. In the talk, the speaker argues that rewards work better when they are contingent on the quality of the work rather than on simply showing up.
autonomy: The feeling of being in charge of your own choices. It is one of three psychological needs the speaker lists, and it explains why a goal someone else imposed on you feels heavier than one you chose.
granular: Detailed and broken down into small, specific parts. The speaker praises granular goals over vague ones, so "get fit" becomes something far more precise.
an implementation intention: A plan that specifies exactly when, where, and how you will act, usually in an if-then form. The speaker describes it as the bridge between wanting something and doing it.

Good morning, everyone. Let's pick up where we left off last week. We've been looking at how psychological research travels out of the laboratory and into ordinary life, and today's subject is one in which every person in this room has a personal stake: motivation, and the goals we build around it.
Let me begin with a puzzle. In the early nineteen seventies, a group of researchers visited a preschool and simply watched which children chose to draw during free play. They identified the children who drew enthusiastically without being asked, and divided them into groups. One group was told in advance that they would receive a certificate for drawing. Another group drew as usual and received nothing. Two weeks later, the researchers returned and observed free play once more. The children who had been promised a certificate were now drawing noticeably less than before.
That result surprised a great many people at the time, and it still surprises my students. We tend to assume motivation behaves like fuel: add more, and you get more. What this study revealed is that motivation has more than one source, and the sources do not always add up.
Psychologists draw a line between intrinsic motivation, which arises from the activity itself, from curiosity, enjoyment, or a sense of mastery, and extrinsic motivation, which arrives from outside: money, grades, certificates, approval. When an external reward is introduced for something a person already loves, it can quietly undermine the internal drive that was there to begin with. The child stops drawing because drawing is fascinating and begins drawing because drawing produces a certificate. Take the certificate away, and the reason to draw disappears along with it. Researchers named this the overjustification effect.
Now, I want to be careful here, because this finding is frequently misreported. It does not mean that rewards are harmful, and I would be uncomfortable if you left this room believing that. Rewards work perfectly well, and sometimes work beautifully, when the task is genuinely dull and nobody had any internal enthusiasm to damage in the first place. They also work when they are contingent on the quality of what you produce rather than on mere participation, because a reward for excellence carries information. It tells you that you did something well. The difficulty arises in a narrower situation than the popular summary suggests: when someone already loves an activity, and we attach a payment to it, and the payment then becomes the story the person tells about why they are doing it.
This connects to a broader framework you'll encounter repeatedly in the literature, which proposes that human beings have three fundamental psychological needs. The first is autonomy, the sense that your actions originate with you rather than being imposed. The second is competence, the sense that you are getting better at something. The third is relatedness, the sense of being connected to other people. Motivation that satisfies these needs tends to be durable. Motivation that ignores them tends to collapse the moment supervision is removed, which is worth remembering the next time you wonder why a goal your parents chose for you feels so much heavier than one you chose yourself.
So much for wanting things. Let's talk about how we pursue them, because this is where goal-setting research becomes practical.
The central finding, replicated across hundreds of studies, is straightforward. Specific and difficult goals produce better performance than vague encouragement. Telling someone to do their best sounds supportive, but it provides nothing to aim at and nothing to measure. A granular goal does both. "Get fit" is not a goal; it's a wish. "Run three kilometers on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday before eight in the morning" is a goal, because at the end of the week you know precisely whether you did it.
But specificity alone is not enough, and here we come to the gap that frustrates most people. Wanting something and knowing exactly what you want are not the same as doing it. The tool that bridges that gap is called an implementation intention, and it takes a simple form: if situation X occurs, then I will perform behavior Y. If it is Tuesday at seven in the evening, then I will open my textbook at the kitchen table. This sounds almost too simple to matter, but studies of vaccination uptake, exercise habits, and study behavior have found that people who write such plans follow through at roughly double the rate of people who merely express an intention. The reason appears to be that the plan removes the moment of decision. You are no longer deciding whether to study; the situation itself triggers the behavior.
There's one more distinction I want to leave you with, and it concerns how goals are framed. Some goals move toward something desirable: I want to build a career in medicine. Others move away from something feared: I don't want to disappoint my family. Both can generate effort, but research consistently finds that avoidance goals keep your attention fixed on the threat, and people pursuing them report higher anxiety and lower satisfaction even when they succeed. Achievement arrives, and relief arrives with it, but not much else.
Finally, a word about the middle. Every long project has a stretch where the novelty has worn off and the finish line is not yet visible. You hit a wall. Progress reaches a plateau, effort continues, and improvement seems to stop. This is where self-efficacy matters, meaning your belief that you are capable of succeeding at this particular task. Notice that I said belief, not ability. Two students with identical skill will persist for very different lengths of time depending on what they believe about themselves.
There's a useful piece of research here involving coffee cards. Customers were given loyalty cards requiring ten stamps for a free drink. A second group received cards requiring twelve stamps, but with two already stamped. The requirement was identical, ten purchases either way. The second group completed their cards significantly faster. We accelerate as we approach a finish line, a pattern known as the goal gradient effect, and the second group had been given the feeling of already being underway.
The practical implication is this. If a goal feels daunting, do not simply promise yourself you'll work harder. Break it into stages small enough that you are always near a finish line, and make your progress tangible, on paper, where you can see it. Motivation is not a personality trait you either possess or lack. It is a condition you can engineer.
