Critical Thinking | Theme of the Week Overview
Hello everyone, and welcome back to English Plus Podcast. You know, we live in a pretty noisy world, don’t we? Every day, we’re bombarded with information, opinions, hot takes, and “must-see” content. It can feel overwhelming, and sometimes, it’s just hard to know what to believe. How do you separate the signal from the noise?
Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to tackle together this week.
This week, our theme is Critical Thinking. And I know, that might sound a little academic or serious, but I promise you, we’re going to treat it for what it is: an essential, and honestly, a fascinating toolkit for navigating the modern world.
We have a massive week planned for you, both here on the podcast and over on the website.
First up, we have our main five-part podcast series, The Critical Thinking Renaissance. We’re starting from the very beginning in Episode 1, defining what critical thinking really is. Then, we’ll dive into the language of logic, spotting those sneaky fallacies you hear in advertising and media. And of course, we’ll get super practical with a toolkit of exercises you can start using today to sharpen your mind. We’ll even explore our own cognitive biases and look at the huge question: is AI a partner or an adversary in our quest to think more clearly?
But that’s just the start.
Over on the website, we’ll publish a collection of brand new magazine articles to go even deeper. We’ll trace the history of critical thinking from Socrates to the scientific method. We’ll talk about how to raise a generation of critical thinkers. We’ll explore why it’s the single most valuable skill in your career. And we’ll even look at how thinking critically about your own life can lead to better health, better finances, and genuine well-being.
And inside each of those articles, you’ll find a fun, interactive quiz waiting for you! You can test yourself to see if you can spot the difference between a philosophical concept and a logical fallacy, discover what kind of questioner you are, try to solve a tricky business dilemma, and even see if you can spot the pseudoscience in wellness ads.
And for those of you who enjoy our more personal episodes, I’ve got a brand new series of Thinking Out Loud episodes dropping this week too. We’ll get a bit satirical with a guide on “How to Be Right All the Time (Without Ever Having to Think),” and I’ll share a very personal story about the difficult, but liberating process of changing my mind about something I once believed deeply. We’ll also reflect on the simple freedom of saying “I don’t know” in a world that demands certainty.
And finally, because this is English Plus, we’ve got five new Listening Comprehension Practices all tied to our theme. You can practice your English while learning about the Sherlock Holmes method of deduction, the tragic story of the Challenger disaster, and how to practice the incredible skill of ‘steel-manning’ an argument.
It is a packed week, full of practical tools, fascinating stories, and a lot of food for thought. My goal is that by the end of this week, you’ll feel more confident, more curious, and better equipped to engage with the world around you.
The journey starts now. So, follow us on your favorite podcast app so you don’t miss a single episode, and head over to our website to check out all the articles and quizzes. I can’t wait to explore all of this with you.
Until then, take care, and let’s get thinking.
